Student Services
Children come to school with abilities and talents, not limitations and handicaps.  All children can learn.  Some learn differently and at different speeds, but they can learn."
(a former Massachusetts Commissioner of Education)

Student Services includes a variety of student support services, special education, civil rights, and services for homeless students.

Our goal is to provide every student with a free, appropriate public education allowing each student to achieve to his/her highest educational potential through access to the general education curriculum.

August 23, 2013

Dear Families and Friends of the Student Services Department,

Welcome back to Cohasset. I hope you all had time to relax, enjoy the gorgeous weather, and spend time with family and friends. This summer has certainly been a short one and we are all hopeful the weather cooperates for this coming year!

After a busy summer of adding new members and transitioning roles within the Student Services Department, I ask you to join me in welcoming and supporting the new and familiar faces in our Cohasset community.

Emily Katz-Williamson – Team Chair, Osgood and Deer Hill Schools
Tammilyn Borkowski – Team Chair, Cohasset Middle-High School
Emily Caldwell – ILC Teacher, Middle School
Leanne McCarthy – Adjustment Counselor, Middle-High School
Victoria Sullivan – 8th Grade Special Education Liaison
Rebecca Walters – High School Special Education Liaison

Together, the team will focus on expanding our knowledge, teaching practices and support of students within the areas of executive functioning. On October 11th, we will welcome Sarah Ward, an expert within the field of executive functioning, to help us learn more about how our actions and efforts impact our learners. In collaboration with Cohasset Middle-High School, the Students Services staff will work to align our support services curriculum with that of general education in grades 6-12. The new curriculum will support direct teaching of executive functioning and study skills, while increasing student’s awareness of individual learning styles.

Throughout the year, you will start to see new IEP paperwork as we begin using eSped. This new, online database system will give us access to Standard Based Goals and Objectives, Rich Text Editor and Language Translation Services, all of which will provide increased security, enhanced compliance, and efficiency within our work. We ask for your patience as we integrate the many benefits to this new program. In the coming months, we will also launch a Parent Portal, giving parents secure access to their student’s Special Education file. Online document sharing will afford quicker response time and efficiency in parent notifications, while helping us decrease our dependency on paper.

The Cohasset Public Schools Special Education Handbook will soon be available on the Cohasset Public School’s website. The handbook is developed to support parents, teachers and administrators in the Special Education Process. Many hours were spent collaborating on the handbook and it continues to evolve as we work together. Please access the handbook for reference on the process and procedures of the Student Services Office.

The Cohasset SEPAC (Special Education Parents Advisory Council) developed a comprehensive schedule of Parent Information Nights for the 2013-2014 school years. Continuing in their mission to foster knowledge, understanding and communication between parents, school, medical professionals, and community, this active and supportive volunteer group has a variety of resources and opportunities to help new and informed parents. The calendar of events is located on the SEPAC webpage found at www.CohassetSEPAC.org. All are encouraged to attend!

Enclosed, please find a few documents for reference and assistance. Should you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 781.383.6104.

One final, friendly reminder: Please return any outstanding paperwork to the Office of Student Services prior to the start of school. We are not able to implement any changes to IEP services and/or placements without your consenting signature. Should you have questions or concerns about your individual student, please contact my office directly.

Wishing you all a happy return to school! We look forward to seeing all the smiling faces on September 3rd.

Best Regards,
Lori Villani
Director of Student Services
